- What are the drivers of success in accelerated technology startups?Publication . Hamilton, Jenna Lynn; Costa, Cláudia Isabel de SousaThis research focuses on the new, early-stage entrepreneurial support mechanism – the accelerator. Startups face many challenges and have high failure rates. Accelerators aim to help startups succeed; however, their impacts are unproven. This paper provides a thorough analysis of accelerated technology startups, to better understand their impacts. This research aims to answer the question, “what factors drive success in accelerated technology startups?” and to identify which factors define ‘promise’ at the beginning of acceleration and ‘success’ at the end of acceleration. Data from 108 accelerated technology startups was collected through a survey. The survey was organized around four factors: the team’s credibility, background, financial prospects, and their idea. Accelerator stakeholders assessed these factors at two time periods, beginning and end of the acceleration program. A thorough analysis of the data at both time periods identified some interesting trends and findings. Ultimately, the startups’ team credibility at the start of an accelerator was found to be the main driver of success. Additionally, the research also identified a startups’ team credibility as the strongest predictor of ‘promise’ and ‘success’. Based on these findings, accelerators can optimize their programs based on knowledge of their current competencies. Technology startups can maximize the potential of accelerator programs. The main implication for startups is that they should highlight and focus on aspects of the team that demonstrate their trustworthiness, passion, and credibility to succeed in an accelerator program.
