- Is the initial training of Portuguese early childhood education and care professionals adequately preparing them to work with children aged 0-3?Publication . Moreira, Janete Silva; Gregório, Inês; Aguiar, Ana Lúcia; Brito, Ana Teresa; Cadima, Joana; Barros, LuísaThe ProFormação 0-3 project aims to characterize Portuguese early childhood education and care (ECEC) professionals’ initial training regarding children aged 0-3. Literature shows that ECEC professionals with specific training to work with children aged 0-3 have a more complex and multidimensional comprehension of their development and learning processes (Hu et al., 2019; Schaack et al., 2017). But further investigation is needed, specifically in Portugal (Gomes & Brito, 2022; Vasconcelos, 2011), to identify initial training key-elements (i.e., contents; practices) to potentiate ECEC quality (Eckhardt & Egert, 2018; Loizou & Recchia, 2018). To reach its goals, the project included 2 phases: a) documental analysis to identify all higher education and vocational programs available; b) focus groups with higher education lecturers of identified programs to understand their perceptions on how initial training prepares ECEC teachers to work with children aged 0-3, and with ECEC professionals to identify their training needs. The project was approved by the Ethics and Deontology Commission of the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon and complies with all ethical procedures. Results showed that contents related to work with children aged 0-3 are rarely included in initial programs, raising concerns regarding professionals’ preparation to work with infants/toddlers. Interviewees reported a greater focus on children under 3 is needed and expressed their perceptions on the most relevant changes needed. Gaps between contents of current programs and the training needs of ECEC professionals will be discussed, as well as recommendations for relevant complementary training offers.
- Liberty in education: an application of Hayek and Humboldt’s perspectivesPublication . Gregório, InêsThis paper analyses the concept of freedom as developed by Friedrich Hayek and Wilhelm von Humboldt and examines its practical application to the specific area of education policy. To respect the spontaneous character of social orders, both authors take the view that the organization of a national education system should not be monopolized by the centralized state. By way of an alternative, different schools should be allowed to emerge and to address the different needs of children. Within this context, this paper argues that the school choice principle seems to be the most adequate to assure that personal liberty is respected when the government performs its necessary activities through its institutions.
- Modulation of the uptake of critical nutrients by breast cancer cells by lactate: Impact on cell survival, proliferation and migrationPublication . Guedes, Marta; Araújo, João R.; Correia-Branco, Ana; Gregório, Inês; Martel, Fátima; Keating, ElisaThis work aimed to characterize the uptake of folate and glucose by breast cancer cells and to study the effect of lactate upon the transport of these nutrients and upon cell viability, proliferation and migration capacity. Data obtained showed that: a) MCF7 cells uptake (3)H-folic acid ((3)H-FA) at physiological but not at acidic pH; b) T47D cells accumulate (3)H-FA and (14)C-5-methyltetrahydrofolate ((14)C-5-MTHF) more efficiently at acidic than at physiological pH; c) (3)H-deoxyglucose ((3)H-DG) uptake by T47D cells is sodium-independent, inhibited by cytochalasin B (CYT B) and stimulated by insulin. Regarding the effect of lactate, in T47D cells, acute (26 min) and chronic (24 h) exposure to lactic acid (LA) stimulated (3)H-FA uptake. Acute exposure to LA also stimulated (3)H-DG uptake and chronic exposure to LA significantly stimulated T47D cell migratory capacity. In conclusion, the transport of folates is strikingly different in two phenotypically similar breast cancer cell lines: MCF7 and T47D cells. Additionally, lactate seems to act as a signaling molecule which increases the uptake of nutrients and promotes the migration capacity of T47D cells.
- Price controls and market economiesPublication . Alves, André Azevedo; Gregório, InêsGovernments usually adopt price controls to impose restrictions on the price of goods and services by employing the appealing argument that they are protecting the groups who find it difficult to meet increasing prices. Since ancient times, regulators have set maximum or minimum prices – price ceilings or price floors. A maximum price for bread was understood as a means to protect the poorest from starvation and the maximum price for house rents to protect them from becoming homeless. The minimum wage – the price floor for labor – was seen as a guarantee to prevent unskilled workers from falling below a minimum living standard.
