- Capture and transformation of urban soundscape data for artistic creationPublication . Gomes, José Alberto; Pinho, Nuno Peixoto de; Lopes, Filipe; Costa, Gustavo; Dias, Rui; Tudela, Diogo; Barbosa, ÁlvaroURB is a research project designed to collect and store raw data from soundscapes analysis. This paper presents a survey about using URB based on the analysis of work developed by several artists, focusing on the description of their creative process and outcome. By comparing the processes and statements of each artists, the authors identified diverse systematic approaches to reinterpreting raw data provided by urban soundscapes, raising questions about the artistic outcomes vs original sound sources. Furthermore, some considerations are inferred about the artistic relevance of using this process in the creation process.
- Composing with soundscapes: an approach based on raw data reinterpretationPublication . Gomes, José Alberto; Pinho, Nuno Peixoto de; Lopes, Filipe; Costa, Gustavo; Dias, Rui; Barbosa, ÁlvaroURB is a research project designed to collect and store raw data from soundscapes analysis. This paper presents a study about composing music using URB based on the analysis of work developed by several sound artists, focusing on the evaluation of their creative process and musical outcome. By comparing the processes and statements of each composer, the authors identified diverse systematic approaches to reinterpreting raw data provided by URB, raising questions about the musical outcomes vs original sound sources. Furthermore, some considerations are inferred about the artistic relevance of using URB to compose music.
- A computer-mediated interface for jazz piano compingPublication . Dias, Rui; Guedes, Carlos; Marques, TelmoThis paper presents a dynamic interface and voicing algorithm for real-time performance of jazz piano comping. Starting with a given song with a predefined harmonic progression, the algorithm calculates and maps an array of chord voicings to a virtual piano keyboard that can be played in real-time with any physical multi-touch input device like an iPad or computer keyboard. By taking care of the note selection for the voicings, the interface provides a simplified and intuitive way to play sophisticated voicings, while leaving the control over the performance aspects like timing, register, wideness and density to the user.
- Potential industrial synergies in the steelmaking and metal-processing industry: by-products valorization and associated technological processesPublication . Henriques, Juan; Castro, Pedro M.; Dias, Rui; Magalhaes, Bruno; Estrela, MarcoSteelmaking and ferrous metal processing companies are suppliers of great importance to a wide array of industries, thus being quintessential for the social and financial growth of regions and countries. Most used processes (i.e., blast furnace, basic oxygen furnace, and electric arc furnacebased) are, however, highly pollutant, generating hazardous wastes that were usually landfilled. Generated wastes are important sources of secondary raw materials such as zinc and iron, presenting interesting market value. Hence, aiming to develop green procedures, industries have been using diverse approaches to treat and detoxify hazardous wastes, extract and reuse added value components, or even use their existing infrastructures to convert the wastes generated by other industries into secondary raw materials for steel manufacturing. This paper reviews the main industrial processes, focusing on the waste-generating steps, and discloses the most recent and relevant industrial synergies toward a circular economy. The final contribution of this study consists of the compilation of industrial synergies and recovery technologies for the steelmaking and metal processes.
