- Corporate green bonds : how do corporate green bonds fit into CSR agendas?Publication . Cord, Felix; Ramus, TommasoThis study intends to contribute to the analysis of the corporate green bonds as part of a CSR strategy to fight environmental issues. In particular, it investigates the motivations and pressures of companies, in the utility industry, to fund projects via green bonds and the general applicability of this instrument within companies’ CSR agendas. Data are collected from two different sources, including eleven held semi-structured interviews and research on secondary data. The data analysis suggests that utility companies mainly followed a legitimation reasoning to issue green bonds in order to withstand institutional pressures in a strictly regulated environment, and benefit from resulting competitive advantages. Further findings reveal that corporate green bonds’ applications depend on the CSR level: Companies with already well-established transactional CSR levels experience an either voluntary or enforced shift to a transformational CSR level thanks to the characteristics and requirements of the green bond. Consequently, green bonds may play an important role in the upcoming future helping societies transforming companies to a greener and more sustainably responsible business model.
