- Outperformance, leadership, and the evolution of the hedge fund industry : the legacy of Julian RobertsonPublication . Chammaa, Rami Sebastian; Rajsingh, PeterThis thesis examines the leadership, strategic choices, and cultural foundations behind the extraordinary success of Julian Robertson’s Tiger Management and its enduring influence on the hedge fund industry. Using a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative expert interviews, including former Tiger Cubs, and a quantitative survey, the study explores how visionary leadership, rigorous research, talent development, and adaptability contributed to Tiger’s legacy. The analysis identifies six key factors underpinning hedge fund outperformance: leadership, corporate culture, risk management, investment strategy, innovation, and talent incubation. Empirical evidence confirms that Robertson’s disciplined long/short equity strategies, conviction-based investing, and meritocratic culture created not only superior returns but also a pipeline of next-generation hedge fund leaders. The research further shows that many of Tiger's core principles, such as deep research, resilience, and cultural competitiveness, remain relevant and widely valued in the contemporary industry. The findings challenge traditional financial theories such as the Efficient Market Hypothesis, showcasing Tiger’s sustained alpha generation. The thesis contributes to management and strategy literature by highlighting the role of entrepreneurial leadership in dynamic and high-risk environments. It also offers practical insights for aspiring fund managers and institutional investors by unpacking the strategic DNA of a pioneering firm. Ultimately, this study affirms Julian Robertson’s dual legacy: as an investment innovator and a mentor whose influence continues to shape the evolution and ethos of the hedge fund industry.
