Institutional Repository of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa

The Institutional Repository (Veritati) is a reference platform for those who want to access scientific production, as well as master's dissertations and doctoral theses, developed within the scope of the teaching and research activities of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (UCP).

As part of the RCAAP project (Repositórios Científicos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal), it aims to preserve and disseminate scientific production, thus increasing its visibility and impact.

The Institutional Repository is also integrated into the UCP science management ecosystem, which includes, namely, the Ciência-UCP platform and the Scientific Journals of Universidade Católica Portuguesa portal

Optimization of bioactive peptides extraction from chlorella vulgaris
Publication . Cunha, Sara; Coscueta, Ezequiel; Silva, Joana Laranjeira; Pintado, Manuela
Chlorella vulgaris may be a source of several interesting compounds, as bioactive peptides with anticancer, antioxidant, anti-hypertensive activities. Furthermore, microalgae peptides may also be of great interest due to their functional properties as solubility, emulsifying and foaming properties, which could be beneficial for industrial application. The microalgae cell wall is rich in polysaccharides making it rigid and difficult to digest and, consequently, limiting the extraction of proteins and generation of peptides. Whereby it is important to break cell wall to achieve a more efficient peptide extraction. Therefore, this work aimed to obtain an optimized microalgae extract rich in bioactive peptides, through the combination of acid and enzymatic hydrolysis. Chlorella vulgaris was submitted to several extraction conditions, with variable factors including temperature, pH values, enzymes type, enzymes concentration, incubation time, use of salts and acids. The best factors were chosen after the determination of protein concentration (Bicinchoninic acid assay) and hydrolysis degree (2,4,6-Trinitrobenzene-l -Sulfonic Acid Method). A combination of an acid and an enzymatic hydrolysis, with a cellulase and a protease, appeared to be the best method to achieve protein and peptide extraction. The antioxidant and anti-hypertensive activities of peptides were tested by Oxygen-radical absorbance-capacity assay and ACE-inhibitory activity assay, respectively. To confirm the optimal extraction conditions, an experimental design was performed using statgraphic centurion software. Factorial design allowed an evaluation of the effect of three factors (protease concentration, temperature and hydrolysis time) on protein release and extracts bioactivities. The best extracts showed high antioxidant (34 μmol Trolox Equivalent/mg sample) and anti-hypertensive (IC50 of 12,75 μg protein/mL) activities. Thus, the factorial design allowed to confirm the combination of experimental factors that leads to the most efficient extraction of antioxidant and anti-hypertensive peptides, validating the studied extraction method. The obtained peptide extract may be further tested toward the development of functional foods.
Programa de educação sócio emocional os Mochinhos da Sabedoria
Publication . Costa, Sandra; Campos, Sofia; Ribeiro, Célia; Couceiro, Paula
The ability to identify, express, develop, maintain and regulate emotions as key competences can and should be learned and worked upon. Hence the need, even for the scarcity in the national territory, of the construction and validation of a program in this area. Therefore, it is intended to be used with 5th and 6th grade students to be able to identify six basic emotions. It will consist of three games: game of facial expressions, game of body postures and game of physical sensations. The sample will consist of groups of students from 5th and 6th grades. A field research will be carried out with two groups: the group subject to the application of the program which will receive training in 12 structured sessions and a control group also of 5th and 6th years. The control group will have a ratio of 1 to 2 and will obey the following pairing rules: same gender, age and grade level.
Desenvolver a consciência metalinguística: 3 instrumentos possíveis
Publication . Figueira, Ana Paula Couceiro; Ribeiro, Célia; Pinto, Maria Antonietta; Campos, Sofia
We intend to operationalize the construct metalinguistic awareness and present three tests (THAMs, tests of metalinguistic abilities), tests or resources that allow to analyze this competence. Given that we consider this capacity important and amenable to promotion from childhood, the proposal offers tools for three different age groups: for children, THAM-1, for adolescents, THAM- 2 and for adults, THAM-3. These resources are adaptations to the European Portuguese of MAT's, original in Italian version, of internationally recognized authors, with versions in several languages, worldwide disseminated, even by way of a project European, MATEL. At the national level, they are already in circulation, by the publication of a book, and there are several investigations.
