A revista Lusitania Sacra surgiu em 1956 como órgão do Centro de Estudos de História Eclesiástica, tendo sido publicados 10 volumes até 1978. Com a integração do Centro, agora Centro de Estudos de História Religiosa, na Faculdade de Teologia, em 1984, iniciou-se nova série da revista, em 1989. Actualmente procura-se que a Lusitania Sacra tenha uma unidade temática ou cronológica no conteúdo de cada volume. A revista preenche um campo único na Historiografia portuguesa e está aberta à colaboração de investigadores nacionais e estrangeiros de outras unidades de investigação. Desde 2011 a revista tem periodicidade semestral.

The journal Lusitania Sacra was first launched in 1956 as the official outlet for the Centre of Ecclesiastical History Studies and going onto publish a total of ten volumes through to 1978. Following its integration into the Catholic University of Portugal and under the auspices of the new CEHR – Centre of Religious History Studies, the journal embarked on a new series with a new volume published yearly until 2010 and semestrial since 2011.

As the official publication of the CEHR, the Lusitania Sacra mission is the study of history based upon religious phenomena. Centered on religion as a means of analyzing Portuguese society – whether in terms of mentalities, institutions or social practices –, its scope extends across our understanding of the multi-layered interactions between social and religious dynamics. Open to the broader academic community, this journal fulfils a unique role within Portuguese historiography.
