Abstract(s)
The approaches aimed at physical and mental health problems on adolescence have been giving more emphasis on remediation instead of prevention. Similarly, interventions are also often focused on physical health or mental health, and rarely integrate the two dimensions. The “#EntreViagenseAprendizagens” is a group intervention program designed to promote global wellbeing and healthy lifestyles among adolescents from 8th and 9th grades. This paper intends to evaluate its impact on some dimensions (emotional regulation difficulties, wellbeing and lifestyle habits) and to explore the perceptions and the evaluation of participants regarding the program and its sessions, using quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Fifty-four adolescents (13-21 years old) from two schools (one of vocational education and another of regular education) participated in the program, and 38 of them completed self-report questionnaires pre- and post-intervention. Non-parametric tests for paired samples were used to compare, for participants from each school, pre- and post- intervention results on the Portuguese versions of Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, the EPOCH Measure of Adolescent Well-Being, and some items from Health Behaviour in School-aged Children. Results show statistically significant improvements in one of the schools on the levels of optimism (EPOCH) and emotional clarity (DERS), and in the other school on the level of connectedness (EPOCH). There were also general improvements (values near of significance) in dimensions related to healthy eating (e.g., more consumption of soup) and school environment (e.g., more acceptance from other colleagues). The qualitative results showed very high levels of participant’s satisfaction and identification of relevant outcomes (e.g., learning about oneself and others). In conclusion, the evaluation of #EntreViagenseAprendizagens showed promising results. We suggest the review of some contents and its implementation with more adolescents from different schools.
