Abstract(s)
The relationship between trauma, memory and representation is as intimate as aporetic, contentious and problematic. If memory and representation are, on the one hand, mutually constitutive, representation and trauma, on the other, are antagonic, if not mutually exclusive concepts. Focusing on Esma’s Secret (Jasmila Zbanic, 2006), and drawing from theories on memory and gender studies, this article inquires into the way the Bosnian war is recalled and represented in the post-conflict present, i.e. how trauma is articulated through filmic representation, and finally, the extent to which it is possible to think of gendered memories as “counter-memories” to the hegemonic discourse of war and violence.
