Vol. 13 n.º 3 (1999), 247-257http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/13236The history of divorce law in Portugal is discussed from its introduction in 1910 with the installation of the anti-clerical First Republic through the conservative changes of the Salazar dictatorship to the reforms of the 1970s following the collapse of that regime. Particular attention is given to the changing approach to custody and the exercise of parental responsibility. Joint custody was made available in 1995 as a result of a coalition between feminist and fathers' rights interests but still has limited popular support in an environment where many couples still hope for a finding of fault.engjournal article
