Nº 22 (2013), p. 159-177.0872-0215http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/21563O presente estudo começa por apresentar as linhas principais da evolução da teoria do conto em geral, com especial atenção ao pensamento de Edgar Allan Poe, passando, de seguida, a uma panorâmica do estudo teórico e crítico do conto em Portugal, que teve início no século XVII com Corte na Aldeia, de Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, a primeira tentativa no sentido de uma doutrinação sobre a arte do conto e da novela. Podemos dizer que, em geral, o estudo do conto em Portugal sofreu uma influência direta ou indireta das ideias de Poe, quer através dos teorizadores norte-americanos, quer através dos estudiosos latino-americanos, que discutiram os aspetos que caracterizam o conto como género narrativo e como reflexo da condição moderna e pósmoderna.This study starts by presenting the main lines that accompanied the evolution of short story theory in general, with special attention on the thought of Edgar Allan Poe. Afterwards, it shows an overview of the theoretical and critical study of the short story in Portugal, which began in the seventeenth century with Corte na Aldeia, by Francisco Rodrigues Lobo, the first attempt to present a set of guidelines on the art of the short story and the novella. We can say that, in general, studies on the short story in Portugal show a direct or indirect influence of Poe’ ideas, whether through North American theorists or through Latin American scholars, all of whom discussed the aspects that characterize the short story as a narrative genre and as a reflection of modern and postmodern condition.porTeoriaCríticaBrevidadeContençãoUnidadeTheoryCriticismBrevityContentionUnityjournal article10.34632/mathesis.2013.5262
