Mais tarde, utilizaram?se no Renascimento Italiano, mas foi no panorama português que atingiram uma especial singularidade artística. A presente investigação pretende colmatar a carência de estudos no que respeita às tipologias, às formas, às temáticas, às técnicas e aos materiais utilizados neste género artístico no Norte de Portugal. A construção de uma base de dados para cinco distritos e a posterior quantificação dos resultados foram metodologias imprescindíveis para a classificação das pinturas em caixotões. Através da realização de exames e análises foi feita uma comparação a nível técnico e material de dois casos da mesma autoria em que se verificaram diferenças sobretudo na camada de preparação.The origins of coffered ceilings go back to the Classic Antiquity; later, it was used in the Italian Renaissance, but it was in the Portuguese panorama that they achieved an artistic uniqueness. This research seeks to overcome the lack of studies regarding the types, forms, themes, techniques and materials used in this type of art in the North of Portugal. The creation of a database for five districts and the subsequent quantification of the results were crucial methodologies to categorize the paintings on coffered ceilings.
