A representatividade dos cidadãos na assembleia é assegurada através de eleições, no entanto, em Portugal, os níveis de confiança nas instituições políticas têm decrescido. Uma vez que os media se afirmam como o veículo comunicacional das sociedades contemporâneas, infere-se que parte da responsabilidade por esta descrença nas instituições políticas se deva à cobertura noticiosa. Esta Dissertação pretende responder à problemática de como é feita a cobertura jornalística do Parlamento nos noticiários televisivos? Com base numa análise de conteúdo de peças noticiosas dos três canais generalistas, RTP, SIC e TVI, é possível traçar uma resposta. A presença da actividade parlamentar na cobertura noticiosa apresenta valores mais baixos na RTP e na TVI, bem como uma cobertura tendencialmente mais negativa. A RTP não cumpre o ideal de uma cobertura isenta e objectiva. Pelo contrário, a SIC detém essas características, devido à iniciativa do “Parlamento Global”. Finalmente, a comissão parlamentar de inquérito do BES, e a comissão parlamentar de trabalho do ministério da saúde permitem reforçar as funções do Parlamento junto dos cidadãos.The parliament has been at the origin of the democratic regime, and constitutes the heart of democracy. Representation of citizens at the assembly is assured at the polls, however, in Portugal, levels of trust in political institutions have decreased significantly. Since the media system brings together contemporary societies, we can argue its responsibility for poor levels of trust in politics, through the media coverage. This Dissertation intends to reply to the issue of media coverage of parliamentary functions. Through content analysis of news, from the three main television broadcasters, it is possible to find an answer. The presence of parliamentary functions in the news is low, mainly because of the coverage from RTP and TVI. Furthermore, the style of news is frequently negative; hence the public television broadcaster – RTP – doesn’t convey its goals of objectivity and exempt. Contrariwise, it is a commercial broadcaster – SIC – who delivers those goals of public service, mostly due to the initiative “Global Parliament”.
