Portugal ainda tem um longo caminho a percorrer para adotar e promover a implementação desta tecnologia, e para tal é necessário despertar as consciências dos órgãos governamentais e autárquicos, uma vez que conhecimento e reconhecimentos técnico e académico já atravessam o território nacional, verificando-se já a realização de vários estudos que conjugam várias especialidades. Ao longo do presente trabalho é apresentada a estratégia do município da Maia para o fomento da instalação de coberturas ajardinadas. Para tal, já foram dados alguns passos, verificando-se uma aposta clara no envolvimento político no tema, a sensibilização dos técnicos municipais e a sua formação especializada paralelamente ao diagnóstico das coberturas de edifícios municipais capazes de albergaram coberturas extensivas e a elaboração do projeto da cobertura ajardinada da Escola Ambiental da Quinta da Gruta. Existe um longo caminho a percorrer, que implica um investimento financeiro, cujo retorno é demorado. A presente tese demonstra a capacidade que existe ao nível do órgão autárquico municipal de querendo, mesmo na ausência de legislação ou regulamentação sobre a matéria, apostar numa visão sustentável do futuro das nossas cidades, que será benéfica para todos.Green Roofs become a widespread technology that is regulated in many cities or even countries throughout the world, given the extraordinary environmental, economic and social benefits. Portugal still has a long way to go to foster the implementation of this technology. Despite scientific knowledge and interdisciplinary studies throughout the country, governmental awareness at local and national level is still needed. In the course of this research is presented the strategy of the Municipality of Maia for promoting the installation of green roofs. Some steps have already been taken and there is obviously a clear political commitment in this issue, as we can see through several actions implemented to raise the city workers´ awareness and to provide them with specialized training, in different areas of expertise. At the same time, the diagnosis of the city buildings, in order to identify opportunities for extensive green roof implementation, and a project in this area at Quinta da Gruta – Environmental Education Center were carried out. There is still a long way to go, with a demanding financial investment and a long term return.
