This article, which is part of a broader research on "school failure in the first university year in Angola" aims, at this stage, to achieve two objectives: first, to account for the complexity and divergences that the concept of school failure contains, and secondly, to characterize the dimension of this phenomenon in the mechanical engineering course in an Institution of Public Higher Education of Angola, in the period between 2012-2015. The study revealed that the concept of school failure is ambiguous, it depends a lot on the education system of each country. In any case, school failure reflects the inability of the school, teachers and the entire structure to create privileged conditions for students to have access to meaningful learning. On the other hand, it was concluded that the school success rates in the mechanical engineering course at a University of Angola are very low, not exceeding 40%.porSchool failureFirst year of universityMechanical engineeringO (in)sucesso escolar no primeiro ano do curso de engenharia mecânicaconference object
