José em Areias de Vilar, concelho de Barcelos e distrito de Braga. Esta investigação teve como principal objetivo estudar a evolução da doença mental, bem como o facto dos doentes mentais pedirem dinheiro a terceiros. A loucura foi, ao longo dos tempos, alvo de muitos entendimentos. Até ao século XVIII, a doença mental esteve associada a ideias sobrenaturais, forças e razões de natureza mística. Com o aparecimento do Iluminismo e das ideias que saíram da Revolução Francesa, iniciou-se um processo de humanização da loucura. Assim, as infra-estruturas de apoio aos doentes mentais, bem como as equipas médicas tornaramse cada vez melhores. Em Portugal, os avanços clínicos na área da doença mental surgiram essencialmente no século XIX e na primeira metade do século XX. Estes séculos marcaram o aparecimento dos hospitais psiquiátricos no nosso país, bem como de algumas leis de saúde mental. As doenças psiquiátricas têm vindo, por isso, a ser alvo de diversas transformações, que vão contribuindo para melhorar o bem-estar do doente mental.This research was developed in St. Joseph Home Health Care, in Areias de Vilar, which belongs to the county of Barcelos and it’s in the district of Braga. The main aim of this investigation was to study the development of the mental disease as well as the fact that the people who suffer from this illness ask for money to people they see in the streets. Throughout time madness had different approaches. Until the 18th century mental disease was associated to supernatural ideas, strengths and reasons of mystical nature. With the emergence of Enlightenment and the ideas that came out of the French revolution, the humanization of madness started all over the world. Thus, health care homes to support and take care of patients as well as medical staff improved. In Portugal the clinical progresses in mental disease emerged especially in the 19th century and in the second half of the 20th century. These centuries determined the appearance of psychiatric hospitals in our country and the establishment of mental diseases laws.
