A natureza retórica da linguagem, os interesses ocultos e a má formação dos oradores, a suscetibilidade do auditório, são alguns dos problemas levantados pelo próprio Tucídides, que ganham ressonância nas vozes de Péricles, Cléon e Diódoto. Aqui analisamos as oposições, convergências e especificidades das críticas veiculadas por cada uma destas vozes, alinhadas pela preocupação fundamental da procura da verdade.Thucydides' criticisms of the Athenian democratic system are particularly focused on denouncing the weaknesses of the oratory debate, a privileged instrument of democratic dialectics. The rhetorical nature of language, hidden interests, speakers' lack of education and susceptibility of the audience, are some of the problems raised by Thucydides himself, which resonate in the voices of Pericles, Cleon, and Diodotus.
