Não obstante, este processo contou não só com apoio, mas também com oposição, de tal forma que chegou mesmo a ser interrompido. Em 1977 algumas mudanças permitiram que a Santa Sé constituísse canonicamente a nova diocese que correspondia, na prática, ao distrito de Viana do Castelo, cumprindo assim as recomendações do II Concílio Vaticano que recomendara que as circunscrições eclesiais correspondessem, quando possível, às circunscrições civis.The territorial organization of the Portuguese ecclesiastical structure underwent several developments in the 20th century, one of its last achievements being the constitution of the diocese of Viana do Castelo in 1977. However, this process had not only support, but also opposition, in such a way that it was interrupted. In 1977 some changes allowed the Holy See to canonically constitute the new diocese that corresponded, in practice, to the district of Viana do Castelo, thus fulfilling the recommendations of the II Vatican Council which had recommended that ecclesiastical circumscriptions correspond, when possible, to civil circumscriptions.porconference proceedings
