As a result, the need to implement a global and sustainable response on the international agenda has become imperative, not only in Syria’s neighboring countries but also within Europe itself and its states Member States, as is the case of Portugal. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze Portugal’s actions to diminish the consequences of this crisis, focusing specifically on the role of civil society in the reception and integration of the refugees. Taking into account the framework of the European Union, in which Portugal is obviously inserted, the Portuguese example is examined based on the actions and initiatives of the State, focusing on the reaction of the Portuguese society. This report ends with the analysis of a case study involving an institution which hosted a family of Syrian refugees, namely the "Salgueirinhos", by which we explore Portugal's options as a host country, examining their strengths and need for improvements.A guerra civil na Síria levou a um movimento maciço de refugiados que se prolonga desde o seu início, em 2011. Nesse sentido, tornou-se imperativo uma resposta global e sustentável na agenda internacional, tanto dos países vizinhos como da própria Europa e seus Estados- Membros, como é o caso de Portugal. A presente dissertação pretende analisar especificamente a resposta encontrada por Portugal para amenizar as consequências desta crise, focando especificamente o papel da sociedade civil no acolhimento e na integração dos refugiados. Tendo em conta o quadro da União Europeia, no qual Portugal obviamente se insere, o exemplo português é então examinado com base nas ações e iniciativas do Estado, incidindo na reação da sociedade civil portuguesa.
