- How is goodwill impairment driven by relative firm performance? Evidence from GermanyPublication . Brandão, Sara Fontes Coutinho Mesquita; Hossfeld, ChristopherGoodwill treatment has been facing considerable changes in terms of regulation. More recently, IAS 36 (2004) develops the subject of impairment of assets, stating that goodwill should be subject to impairment tests on an annual basis. In the IFRS context, the present research study aims at investigating how goodwill impairment is driven by relative firm performance in Europe, using Germany evidence. More precisely, the paper focuses on two distinct analyses: comparing differences between impairment and non-impairments firms (cross-sectional analysis) and impairment and non-impairment years (longitudinal analysis). Using both t-tests and Wilcoxon Rank Sum statistical tests, findings partially support the hypothesis that impairment firms are significantly less efficient when compared to nonimpairment firms in the period of goodwill impairment recognition. However, results of the longitudinal analysis do not support the hypothesis that Germany firms are relatively less efficient in the year of goodwill impairment comparing to the year of no impairment. These results are in line with similar studies applied to the United States and US GAAP. Finally, based on the longitudinal analysis’ findings, the earnings management topic is briefly discussed.
- A case study of how Norwegian companies in the maritime sector perceive Portugal’s competitiveness, a strategic perspectivePublication . Ulvin, Martine Andersen; Cardeal, NunoThe purpose of this study is to better understand Norwegian firms’ perception of the Portuguese strengths and weaknesses as a destination for Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The focus will be on the Norwegian maritime industry, more specifically shipbuilding, repair and services. The first and uttermost importance of the study is to understand why Norwegian companies that have not invested in the Portuguese maritime industry might be reluctant to, and how the government can be advised to avoid similar pitfalls in the future. The single case study approach is utilized to understand the different aspects of the research questions. The data collection was performed through primary and secondary data. Three interviews were conducted with knowledgeable actors in the Norwegian maritime industry. The findings indicate there are areas for improvements and areas that can be further utilized and developed. The geographical location, natural resources, highly educated personnel, governmental emphasis, and excess capacity are found through primary and secondary data collection to be favorable aspects in the Portuguese maritime industry. The lack of skilled workers in production, regulatory complexity, macroeconomic instability, and difference in prosperity level between the Norwegian and Portuguese maritime industry, are found to be potential distortions. Recommendations are to develop the maritime industry through focus and regional development.
- National health care system : characterization of the Portuguese Health Care System : main challenges and focus delivery : a strategic approachPublication . Jesus, Duarte Nuno Pina Aparício Taylor de; Celeste, PedroHealth usually appears as one of the main concerns of the Portuguese, that is why it is so discussed; and also because of the amount of money spent each year on HealthCare. Regarding the public sector we are in a presence of an enormous challenge to the management team, at all levels, by the complexity of the system and also because of the changing minds of the population. Nowadays, the population not only demand outstanding HealthCare services but also demands outstanding management performances. The purpose of this work is to analyze the Portuguese HealthCare System, focusing the analysis in the main challenges the System has ahead and in the solutions that a Strategic Approach may bring to improve the Service Delivery. This work tries to build a bridge between HealthCare concepts and Management concepts, as such tries to contribute with valuable knowledge to the ongoing debate about our HealthCare Delivery. In order to reach those objectives we based our research not only in reports that our public entities release, each year, but also in a market research done with the help of HealthCare future and current professionals. The Portuguese HealthCare System is now under tremendous challenges; the financial pressure and the lack of a strategic planning are two among others; the need of structural changes is patent. A focus approach is the route and we discovered that only with a proper definition of value that takes into consideration the quality of the service per euro spent will shift performance.
- The flying man’s journey : evolution of the multimedia marketPublication . Ribeiro, Guilherme Ivens Ferraz de Melo; Celeste, PedroIn the year 1999 and 2000, Nikon and Canon launched the first digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR’s), and some years later the first DSRL shooting full high definition (HD) video was on the market at an extremely affordable price. Along with the Internet boom and the era of social networks, the multimedia market suffered a dramatic change. Knowledge and equipment became much more accessible, and companies started to see innovative and creative multimedia projects done by individual young enthusiasts that reached larger audiences with extremely low budgets, through the electronic word of mouth on the Internet. Web Marketing became one of the most important marketing tools available for companies. This dissertation focuses on the evolution of the multimedia market, and how Internet and technology affected it, by creating a new market for online content. By making a parallel of a young business student’s path and his market research efforts, the study concludes that there is an open space on Web marketing market and investigates how can the student capitalize on his skills by properly introducing a new brand and concept into the market.
- The implications on customer brand perceptions of merger & acquisition activity in the luxury industryPublication . Loureiro, Filipa Aguiar; Tran, VéroniqueThe growing tendency of luxury brands to concentrate within multibrand conglomerates, in contrast with the increasing customer demand for brand identity and unique experiences, leads to a growing interest on understanding how customers react to the integration of several luxury brands under the same corporate parent. The present study intends to decipher existent and post integration brand perceptions through the measurement of customer-based brand equity (CBBE) and four of its most consensual dimensions in literature: Brand Awareness, Brand Associations, Perceived Quality and Brand Loyalty. The analysis focused on three brands belonging to Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy: Louis Vuitton, Céline and Fendi, given their distinct levels of brand familiarity. An online survey was distributed and results were analyzed through regression estimations and a median difference analysis. A positive relation was found between brand equity dimensions and the overall construct. However, the use of more targeted dimensions could have further benefited the analysis. Moreover, it was possible to conclude that overall prior brand perceptions affect the evaluations of the integration, despite the only significant effect of the evaluations on overall post perceptions being negative, which indicates that customer awareness about the corporate parenting may be hazardous for the brands. Finally, it is also concluded that the magnitude of perception’s changes varies for different levels of brand familiarity, both positively and negatively.
- ALO case study : entering a new market : getting back on track after getting lostPublication . Barreira, João António Policarpo Mendes; Celeste, PedroThe purpose of this thesis is to study the influence of ALO’s positioning and targeting on its business, and how it can compromise the entire activity. ALO is an American brand, launched in 2008 in the USA, with the goal of selling natural beverages produced directly through the well-known Aloe Vera plant, providing the consumer with several health and dietary benefits, together with a great taste. In 2013 ALO was already the number 1 bestselling brand within the Aloe Vera beverage segment, and the number 2 bestselling brand within the functional beverage segment, among the markets of USA and Canada. It was also during this same year of 2013 that António Lopes decided to introduce ALO in Portugal and give the opportunity to the Portuguese population to include this amazing drink in their lives and daily activities. While people’s minds are changing towards a healthier and balanced life associated with healthier products’ consumption, the success and acceptance of ALO can’t be considered “black in white”. To make this thesis possible, a complex and thorough study and research was performed and tools used include a Literature Review where the concepts and theory were studied to better address the following parts of the thesis; a Case Study written including a proposal of analysis to be used during class discussions; and a Market Research involving interviews with the company, Survey and Focus Groups. Being ALO a 100% natural beverage with healthy and dietary benefits, António’s first approach was to focus on the part of the population that practise sports on a regular basis and on places dedicated to natural products, ending up with an unsustainable business. With the objective of giving people the opportunity of gathering the pleasure and taste together with the health and dietary benefits, ALO reached the conclusion that the consumer is the average Portuguese citizen, above 15, looking for a balanced life style, trying to keep a healthy life. ALO drink needs to be seen first as a great drink, with the bonus of being healthy and having great benefits – the consumer is more worried with the image, and benefits are the differentiation.
