Resumo: This study concerns the use of qualitative methodology for evaluation research, with a focus upon a strategy inscribed in the logic of reflection-on-action. As a result, the objective is to fix an «epistemology of practice» and thus «revalue the knowledge that comes from an intelligent and reflective practice» (Alarcão, 1996, p. 17). To improve the quality of teaching and learning, the researcher - through two different problematic situations - challenges and confronts longstanding scientific researching theories on professional teaching and learning development , towards a renewed conception of teaching training, Given these hypotheses, the researcher has structured his case study in two different parts. The first part identifies the professional scenario and reflects the practice developed in a primary school classroom in Trofa, north Portugal, during September 2009 and July 2011. During this period, the researcher has assumed the role of group director and cumulatively, teaching math, civic education, added support and School area project. The second part is focused upon the theoretical explanation of the concepts of Social Pedagogy, the responsibility of anticipating student’s needs, empowerment and ethical values in teaching. The empirical work results from the exercise of directing/teaching a class - a challenge not only as professional teacher but also to personal development level. This study highlights the importance of the interaction between action and reflection (and vice versa) on practice. This interaction enables the development of teaching professional skills and the ability to unite and /or reorganize school learning with social learning, gathering different knowledge, a variety of contexts and experiences to the process of working with the students.
